At Kidwells Solicitors, we pride ourselves on fostering talent at every stage. Toby’s journey with us showcases the power of initiative, adaptability, and unwavering support within our team.
From Interest to Initiative: Entering Conveyancing
Toby’s passion for property law predated even owning his first home. While working at a previous firm, he noticed high demand in conveyancing enquiries – services the firm didn’t offer. Taking initiative, Toby proposed launching a Conveyancing Department. That bold move became the spark for his career in conveyancing.
A New Path: Choosing the Licensed Conveyancer Route
Initially pursuing a Solicitor Apprenticeship, Toby spent years balancing full-time work with study. He attempted the SQE1 and found himself in a position where he would need to resit it and spend another year studying. This wasn’t an option for Toby, so with a law degree already obtained, Toby shifted to the Licensed Conveyancer path and earned his qualification in just three months.
“When I received my SQE1 results, I could have given up after years of studying and working. But I was determined to qualify, so the Licensed Conveyancer route turned out to be the right one for me.”
Overcoming Challenges
Toby’s decision to switch pathways came after careful consideration during the Solicitor Apprenticeship. With firm-wide support, he embraced the Licensed Conveyancer qualification – a change that aligned much better with his career goals.
Mentorship, Support and Collaboration at Kidwells
Kidwells stood by Toby throughout his training and transition. As he navigated his path, from Solicitor Apprenticeship to Licensed Conveyancer, the firm’s backing remained unwavering.
Toby highlights two key figures:
“My manager, Alan Horne, has been instrumental in my development; as has Sarah Laight. Alan has always encouraged me to continue studying in order to qualify, which has also led to me progressing within the firm. Sarah has also been very supportive in my career progression at Kidwells, as like her I originally started out in my career in law as a Legal Secretary and have now progressed onto becoming a Director.”
A Milestone Achieved: Becoming a Director
Toby’s commitment has culminated in his promotion as Director of Residential Conveyancing, Bristol – a role he describes as both a personal and professional high point.
“I am very proud to have been promoted. This has been a long time coming, and I’m excited to grow the department in the coming months and years.”
The Kidwells Difference in Conveyancing
Toby believes the firm’s approach, anchored by clear communication, sets Kidwells apart in conveyancing.
“Conveyancing is often a client’s biggest commitment. Communication is essential. At Kidwells, our dedicated client relations and onboarding teams ensure there’s always a clear point of contact.”
Looking Ahead: Vision for Growth
Toby’s immediate goal is to strengthen the department’s presence in Bristol while laying the foundation for expansion across the UK in the future.
Advice to Aspiring Conveyancers
Reflecting on his experience, Toby encourages others to consider alternatives beyond the traditional Solicitor path:
“Becoming a Solicitor isn’t the only option. The Licensed Conveyancer route has worked best for me and it could be your best fit too.”
Reflecting on the Journey
For Toby, there’s immense satisfaction in seeing the impact of his journey, especially as junior colleagues now come to him curious about the Licensed Conveyancer route.
“The hard work has paid off and now junior colleagues are asking me about the Licensed Conveyancer route as a real alternative.”
