My name is Georgia and I have just finished my GCSEs and wanted to follow this with experience of working within a solicitor’s practice.
Earlier this year, I was delighted to be offered a week’s work experience at Kidwells in Hereford, which took place this week. I am very interested in law as a possible career and this week has greatly helped me in figuring out which areas of law I am most interested in. During the week I spent time learning about Employment and HR Law, Family Law, Immigration Law, Land Law and Contested Probate Law.
On the first day, I talked with Kate Wargen, the Practice Director, who explained Kidwells’ corporate structure. Afterwards, I had a tour of the office and met the friendly team. The facilities, including a gym, and the quality of the offices really impressed me. It is evident that the employees here are really well looked after. As the company are currently in the process of becoming paperless, I spent the rest of the day working in reception, helping to prepare files to be scanned. Furthermore, my understanding of client confidentiality improved as the receptionist, Di Rogers, explained to me some of the essential questions one must ask a new client when they contact the firm for the first time. Overall, I was able to see what the beginning steps of acquiring a new client are.
I was introduced to the world of Employment and HR law. By reading through case files, I understood a lot more about issues such as discrimination in the workplace and unfair dismissals. Later in the day I also read a case regarding immigration.
I was given a complete commercial lease to read. This was very interesting and highlighted to me the importance of reading contracts in detail before signing them. At the end of the day, I was also able to read through some acquisitions files. I was tasked with preparing documents ready for a court case the following day.
This was spent with the Family department. I investigated a complex family case. Having read through numerous large files, I prepared a formal report summarising events, conclusions from Court Hearings and any relevant information to the case. This was probably my favourite day of the entire week because I felt I had really helped those working on the case by preparing this report. It was also a very interesting case to research. Being able to summarise and pick out the most necessary details from such a large amount of information was time consuming and not always easy but definitely rewarding. I believe that this skill is very useful, particularly as cases can become increasingly complicated spanning over several years.
On the last day I researched more on the way Kidwells works as an Advanced Business Structure. By looking into what rules and regulations they must adhere to, set out by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and Lexcel, my understanding of how the firm works greatly improved.
Later in the day I was given a case to study regarding the invalidity of a will.
I have really enjoyed my experience working at Kidwells. I have learnt so much, such as the different aspects of law and the different ways in which one can begin a career in law. Thank you so much to the entire team for being so helpful and accommodating of me. I am really grateful for the opportunity I was given.
